This popular tourist area can become very busy during summer when Romantische Strasse will be greatly appreciated for its peaceful situation in a wooded valley just outside the small village of Münster. There are 100 grass touring pitches (out of 140), many level, others with a small degree of slope. They are not hedged or fenced, in order to keep the natural appearance of the woodland. All the pitches have electricity (6A), some shade and are situated either side of a stream (fenced off from a weir at the far end of the site). Twenty-seven fully serviced pitches are on higher ground near reception.
AZUR Camping Schwäbische Alb is situated in the verdant countryside of the Swabian Alb and within reach of the state capital, Stuttgart. This site may be a good choice for families seeking a quiet, relaxing holiday with some activities available for children. There are 150 level grassy touring pitches, some shaded, 120 with 16A Europlugs.
In the northern Black Forest, popular with walkers and cyclists alike, this large and busy site runs along the bank of a small but safe stream in a dramatic wooded valley. Of the 300 or so pitches, 100 of which are for tourers, all with 16A electricity and water and most with drainage. The four shower blocks are of the highest quality. In the middle of the site is a hotel, bar and restaurant complex, which incorporates indoor and outdoor pools available free to campers.
Privately owned, this former municipal site is attractively situated on the outskirts of the pleasant little spa town of Bad Liebenzell in the northeast Black Forest. The 250 pitches (150 for touring units) all have 16A electricity and are neatly arranged in rows on flat grass between hedges, trees and the good access roads. This is a well run and orderly site. The site is often full in high season when a reservation is advisable (if not reserved arrive early). There may be some noise from the nearby roads and railway.
This site stands at the gateway, via Münstertal, to the Black Forest. Not very high up itself, it is just at the start of the long road climb, which leads to the top of Belchen, one of the highest summits of the forest. The site has plenty of shade for the 230 pitches (182 for touring units), all with electrical connections (10/16A, some 2-pin) and TV (100 also have water). The site has recently undergone some modernisation, including improvements to some sanitary facilities.
Attractively located along the banks of the River Main, this site is just 2 km north of Wertheim, a picturesque medieval old town centred at the confluence of the Rivers Main and Tauber. The town is packed with timber-framed houses and is overlooked by Germany’s largest castle ruin. Rothenburg ob der Tauber dates from the Middle Ages and is steeped in heritage. Wine from the Franken area comes in a Bockbeutel, a uniquely shaped bottle best bought at one of the many vineyards. From the campsite, the River Main provides an ever-changing view as the cruise ships and barges slowly pass.
Camping Garden Wahlwies lies in the south of Germany, between fruit orchards and close to Lake Constance. On this small family site, you can savour the peace of the countryside, whilst camping under apple trees. However, tourism around Lake Constance is also close at hand. The pitches are spaciously laid out. As the site is modestly sized, the owners can pay attention to each guest. Fruit farming, which you will often come across in the area, also plays an important role here. The pitches at the front section of the site are located under the apple trees. Further towards the back are more pitches on an open field. Shopping can be done at Netto in Güttingen, or Rewe, Aldi and Lidl in Stockach. You are spoilt for choice when you want to go out for a meal. For instance, in Bodman (6 km) is a restaurant with a view of Lake Constance. Free public transport network with the Bodensee Card. The site has 70 pitches of which 50 are for touring units with 16-amp hook-up point. There is also one chalet available to hire.
If you are looking to stay in Germany, but close to the borders with France and Switzerland, this would be an excellent option. On the southern edge of the Black Forest, with its mild, dry climate and, reputedly, the most sunshine hours in Germany, Lug ins Land sits amongst vineyards with beautiful views across the Rhine Valley to the Vosges Mountains.
Haide is attractively situated beside the River Neckar, just west of the ancient university city and its famous castle. There is direct access to the river from the site, so young children would need to be supervised. It is safe from flooding, but experiences some noise from the railway and road on the opposite bank, although it was not intrusive when we stayed. The site has 217 pitches, mainly without shade, with 160 for touring units. They are not marked out but there is plenty of space and there are 80 electricity connections (6/8A). The whole site is well maintained and is a good base from which to explore Heidelberg or the motor racing track at Hockenheim.
This is a pleasant site overlooking Lake Titisee in this lovely area of the Black Forest. There are marked pitches for touring units, all with electricity (16A Europlug) and on gravel terraces with good views over the lake. Pitches located directly on the lakesideare available.Trees provide good shade in some parts. The small town of Titisee Hochschwarzwald is a 20 minute walk along the lakeside and with the attractions of this part of the Forest near – Freiburg, the Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen, the source of the Danube at Donaueschingen, Basle in Switzerland – it is ideal for a long or short stay. Access to the lake is possible for swimming, boating and carp fishing.
Rhein-Camping Waldshut is a quiet site just south of the Black Forest, a 10-minute drive to Waldshut-Tiengen. The site is in a well-located spot in the Waldshut district of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Boat trips and fishing are close by, and the site is close to public amenities including an outdoor pool edged by a spacious sunbathing area, a miniature golf course with river views and a playground. But that’s not to say the park’s lacking its own facilities.
Camping Beim Freibad is a municipal site midway between Würzburg and Stuttgart on the eastern outskirts of the small town of Künzelsau, the capital of the Hohenlohe District of Baden-Württemberg, It lies in a valley alongside the River Kocher surrounded by picturesque rolling hills. The town hosts a large festival in July. The campsite has a sandy beach and large open-air swimming pool complex, with a toboggan and large grass sunbathing area. There are 28 pitches for tents and tourers with electricity available, some by the river. Cars are parked away from the pitches.
Isny is a delightful spot for families and others looking for a peaceful stay in a very well-managed environment. The site has been developed to a high standard and lies just south of the village in a wood, by a lake. In an open area, there are about 50 individual hardstanding pitches (all with 16A electricity) with a circular access road. A café/restaurant serves snacks and meals from Tuesday to Sunday. It has a terrace that overlooks the lake, which is used for swimming (unsupervised). A low metal rail marks the area for non-swimmers, and there is a large grass sunbathing area. The site also offers a family play area.
Set in a green valley among the foothills of the Black Forest, this family managed site is well placed for visiting the popular Titisee, Feldberg and Totdnau areas, and is only 8 km. from Freiburg. It is divided into 486 numbered pitches, 362 of which are for touring, all with electricity (16A Europlug). Most pitches, which are side by side on gently sloping ground, are of reasonable size and clearly marked out, though there is nothing to separate them. There are increasing numbers of hardstanding pitches suitable for motorhomes. From about late June to mid-August, this site becomes very busy, and booking is advised.
This small, pleasant and friendly site is a very convenient night-stop, just off the Stuttgart-München autobahn, roughly midway between Stuttgart and Ulm, and a reasonable drive from the German border at Aachen. On the edge of a wood, the 50 shaded touring pitches on flat grass and hardstanding are not marked out but adequate space is allowed and all have 10A electrical connections. There are 90 static units and separate area for tents opposite the entrance.
This large, well equipped holiday site offers a wide range of activities and is also a good base for visiting the Black Forest. Close to the reception is a touring area and a section of hardstanding for 12 motorhomes. The 300 touring pitches (out of 765 overall) all have electricity connections (all 16A Euro sockets) and include 235 with water and drainage, but little shade. Two of the site’s lakes are used for swimming, with roped-off areas for toddlers, and non-powered boating. The water was very clean when we visited. The third smaller lake is for fishing.
Part of Germany’s largest theme park and ideally situated as an overnight stop for travellers on the A5 Karlsruhe-Basel autobahn, Europa Park Camping has 200 touring pitches, all with 16A electricity. Standing is on openwork cement blocks and the access roads are tarmac. This is an open, level site and dotted around are tables and benches under cover. Many trees have been planted, although they are still too young to provide significant shade. There is a Wild West theme, with Native American Indian-style teepees and covered wagons to rent.
Set in natural heath and woodland, Gugel’s is an attractive site with 220 touring pitches, either in small clearings in the trees, in open areas or on a hardstanding section used for overnight stays. All have electricity (10/16A) and 40 also have water, waste water and satellite TV connections. Opposite is a meadow where late arrivals and early departures may spend the night. There may be some road noise near the entrance. The site may become very busy in high season and on bank holidays but you should always find room. The excellent pool and wellness complex add to the attraction of this all year site.
This site is set in a quiet position on the side of an attractive valley in the Black Forest. If you would like to dine or wake up to beautiful views across an alpine valley and watch wild deer graze in the meadows opposite, then this is the site for you. Set on three terraces with some shade, the site has 50 fairly level touring pitches, all with electricity (10A), water and drainage. A smaller area is used for tents. In front of the main building is an area of hardstanding for overnight visitors, also with electricity connections. Being close to the toilet facilities, this area is recommended for campers with mobility problems.
In a quiet position on the edge of town, with the river Jagst along one side, this modern three-hectare site, from which you can see the large hilltop castle, has a park-like appearance with mature trees giving plenty of shade. The 95 large, flat, grassy pitches, 70 for touring and including five hardstandings are numbered off tarmac and gravel access roads. Electricity is available for all the pitches from central boxes (16A). All the facilities are in one area to the left of the site entrance in modern units, with reception, a small shop for basic supplies and a bar/restaurant with a terrace open all year.

The Black Forest, or Schwarzwald, is famous the world over for its mountains, forests, thermal springs and spa resorts. Towards the French border romantic castles perch high on the steep slopes above the Rhine. These vine-clad hills together with the Moselle region are renowned for their quality white wines.
