They are gently sloping, on grass/gravel with some tree shade and hedge separation, 80 are fully serviced and some have a lakeside location. In places the Hoher Westerwald rises to over 650 metres and with its network of cycling and walking trails is ideal for those who enjoy a leisurely walk in natural surroundings or something more strenuous.
Camping In der Enz
The 4-star Camping Dornbirn was completely rebuilt in 2019. The infrastructure is architecturally innovative, state-of-the-art and sustainably made from local wood. The location in the middle of nature and yet close to the city centre is almost unique. This site is just outside the town, next to the municipal swimming pool complex, and the enthusiastic Dutch owners give a very warm welcome that makes this a very pleasant place to stay. The site is bisected by the unfenced River Enz, which is little more than a stream at this point. The site has 120 pitches (35 are seasonal). The section nearest the road is occupied by 35 long stay units. The other half, on the other side of the river with its own access road, is solely for tourers. This has 85 very large, open grass pitches, all with electricity (16A), of which 20 are fully serviced with water and drainage.
Camping Am Strandbad
There are several other sites in the Wiedtal Valley, most full of residential or long stay units and visually unattractive. Camping am Strandbad is more appealing and benefits from being only a short, level walk from the small town of Waldbreitbach and its amenities. It is located on the inside of a bend in the River Wied and the touring pitches are all on open grass. Flooding during the winter months can sometimes occur. With a total of 170 pitches, 50 permanent and seasonal units, there are 120 pitches for tourers all with electricity (16A), although some will need very long leads. Swimming is not permitted in the river.
Camping Clausensee
Clausensee is set in an attractive lakeside location in the heart of the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest), a vast area of natural beauty, and one of the largest forests in Europe. The site has about 100 level, grassy pitches for tourers, some with shade and with electricity, fresh and waste water connections. A special area for large motorhomes and a quick stop facility are located at the front of the site.
Camping Sägmühle
Freizeitzentrum Sägmühle is peacefully situated beside a lake, in a wooded valley in the heart of the Palatinate Nature Park, and there are many kilometres of walks to enjoy, as well as castles to explore. There are 303 pitches in total, of which 154 are available for touring, at least 80 sq.m. or more on flat grass, each with electricity (4/16A). Fifty of these are fully serviced and some have hardstanding. One area is close to the lake and it is a pleasant change to find a site that keeps the lakeside pitches for touring units.
Prümtal Camping Oberweis
This is a most attractive and popular site set in a wooded valley alongside the River Prüm. The site has an excellent restaurant, pizzeria and takeaway and a beautiful heated swimming pool. 91 pitches are now fully serviced. There are 80 long-stay units grouped in a separate area at the western end of the site, with the touring area stretching out alongside the river. The 160 touring pitches are on grass, mostly separated by hedging and all with 16A electricity. Pitches vary in size (from 30-110 sq.m) and price, and there is shade from mature trees in most parts.
Knaus Campingpark Rhein-Mosel/Koblenz
One of the Knaus Group sites, Rhein-Mosel Koblenz overlooks the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel rivers where the city of Koblenz has stood since Roman times. One of the most visited cities in Germany, it is well served by this large, busy and efficient site. Unusually, there are no seasonal pitches here, leaving the whole site available for touring units and tents. All pitches have 16A electricity. There is some shade from young trees, but the site has an open feel with views of the rivers, the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. There is some noise from rail and river traffic, but our sleep was not disturbed.
Camping Zum Feuerberg
Campsite Zum Feuerberg is situated on sunny southern side of the Moselle River. Here you can spend hours watching the cruise ships and inland vessels slowly passing by on the Moselle. Directly across from the site is the picturesque wine village of Ediger-Eller, famous for its historic half-timbered houses and cosy outdoor cafés and restaurants. In reception you will find information about the area as well as daily fresh rolls.
Camping Gülser Moselbogen
This site is set well above the river and has a pleasant outlook to the forested valley slopes. A large proportion of the 16-acre site is taken up by privately owned bungalows, but the touring section of 125 large individual pitches is self contained and accessed by gravel paths leading off the main tiled roads. Some pitches have little or no shade, but all have 11/16A electricity and there are water points in each section. An area of gravel hardstanding has been developed and RVs are accepted.
Camping Am Königsberg
Situated in an area between the Rhine and Mosel rivers in a nature area at the foot of the Königsberg, this is a small, attractive, well maintained site with plenty of facilities. Of the 100 pitches, 85 are reserved for touring units, all with electricity, most with fresh and waste water connections. The level, grass, mainly open pitches are easily reached by tarmac site roads. A large separate meadow is for tents and has a paddling pool, communal grill and covered eating area. Trees and hedges provide some shade and division of the site. A large, attractive swimming pool complex next to the site is free to campers.
Camping Südeifel
Family run Camping Südeifel is on the western border of Germany, close to Luxembourg. Of the 160 pitches, 60 are for touring, on level, neatly trimmed grass, either on the central field or alongside the small River Prüm. All have access to electricity (6A Europlug), the riverside pitches having a little shade. The River Prüm is lively and shallow, so ideal for supervised play under the shade of the trees. The campsite’s Prümtaler Tavern serves snacks and drinks, and has a verandah looking out over this simple campsite in the pleasant green Eifel countryside. There is no shop, but a takeaway pizza service is offered.
Knaus Campingpark Bad Dürkheim
This is a large, comfortable site with almost 600 pitches, half of which are for touring. Being situated in Bad Dürkheim, which claims to have the world’s largest wine festival, it can understandably become quite full in high season. Touring pitches are well laid out by the lake in rows named after the local wines, good size and with shade. These are arranged on either side of a long, central arcade of growing vines and along one side of the site, there is a lake. Trees provide some shade and electrical connections are available throughout (16A). There is some noise from light aircraft, taking off and landing at the nearby airfield, especially at weekends.
Camping Burg Lahneck
The location of this site is splendid, well above and overlooking the Rhine valley and the town of Lahnstein – many of the pitches have their own super views. It consists partly of terraces and partly of open grassy areas, has a cared for look and all is very neat and tidy. One can usually find a space here, though from early July to mid-August it can become full. There are 80 individual touring pitches marked but not separated and mostly level, all with electricity (16A). Campers are sited by the site owner. The reception here is friendly and charges reasonable.
Camping Burgen
Camping Burgen is pleasantly situated between the road and the river on the flat, grassy bank of the Mosel between Koblenz and Cochem. The site has attractive views with most of the pitches on the river’s edge being occupied by permanent caravans and attendant boats, but there are 120 individual numbered grassy pitches for touring units, plus a meadow at one end, both with electricity (10/16A). With a railway and a road across the water, a road alongside the site and commercial boats, some noise may be expected. The site fills up for much of July and August but a few pitches are kept for short stay visitors.
Camping Ourtal idyll
You will be looked after by the owner, Margriet, and her husband, Franz-Josef, at this beautifully presented site in a stunning setting. There are 92 comfort pitches with electricity (16A, Europlug), water and drainage and three with electricity only. They are clearly marked on level, grassy ground and have some shade. Alongside the touring area there are 95 pitches used for seasonal units. The river and surrounding area is both a place of relaxation and activity for all the family. The owners have a small schnapps distillery on site and are happy to give visitors a tour around it.
